LIVERPOOL YOUTH TO JOIN GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE

School children and students of Liverpool will be joining the internationally coordinated global strike for climate justice on March 15th. Refusing to attend class, these protesters will gather at 11am at St. George’s Hall before marching through the city centre towards Derby Square.
The youth protesters have a clear message. Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s regular Friday strikes, they question the purpose of learning when climate change puts their future in jeopardy. The movement demand the government take serious climate action. As Thunberg recently said;“We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis.”
The UN has warned that we have 12 years to limit climate catastrophe. This warning has been taken seriously by youth protesters across the globe. Recognising that this is our final chance to take climate action, school children are not letting their age stop them from raising their voices.
The movement has grown in scale ever since from September 2018 when Greta Thunberg first skipped school. Within a month her friends followed her example. Every Friday they handed out leaflets to politicians in front of the Swedish parliament, asking for them to take climate action. By December the #FridaysforFuture movement had spread to 270 cities around the world. This youth-led resistance has gained attention from scientists, journalists and other climate action groups, such as Extinction Rebellion.
Thunberg encourages us to strike this Friday as she has learned first-hand that; “you are never too small to make a difference.” Friday’s event is expected to be the biggest ever youth-led climate strike with demonstrations planned in over 90 countries around the world. It remains to be seen how the MPs will respond to this climate strike, but given the momentum of the campaign, it will be an event impossible to ignore.
